Tucked away in our subconscious is an idyllic vision. We see ourselves on a long trip that ps the continent. We are traveling by train. Out the windows, we drink in the passing scene of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at a crossing, of cattle grazing on a distant hillside, of smoke pouring from a power plant, of row upon row of corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of mountains and rolling hillsides, of city skylines and village halls.
But uppermost in our minds is the final destination. On a certain day at a certain hour, we will pull into the station. Bands will be playing and flags waving. Once we get there, so many wonderful dreams will come true and the pieces of our lives will fit together like a completed jigsaw puzzle. How restlessly we pace the aisles, *ing the minutes for loitering --waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.
"When we reach the station, that will be it! "we cry. "When I'm 18. ""When I buy a new 450SL Mercedes Benz! ""When I put the last kid through college. ""When I have paid off the mortgage!""When I get a promotion.""When I reach the age of retirement, I shall live happily ever after! "
Sooner or later, we must realize there is no station, no one place to arrive at once and for all. The true joy of life is the trip. The station is only a dream. It constantly outdistances us.
"Relish the moment "is a good motto, especially when coupled with Psalm 118:24:"This is the day which the Lord hath made;we will rejoice and be glad in it. "It isn't the burdens of today that drive men mad. It is the regrets over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who rob us of today.
So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. In stead, climb more mountains, eat more ice cream, go barefoot more often, swim more rivers, watch more sunsets, laugh more, cry less. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough.

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don't act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion,“I love you”is too luxurious for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine's Day is even more out of the question. Finally my father has a bad temper. When he's very tired from the hard work, it is easy for him to lose his temper.
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I silently sat down beside her and looked at her.
“Mom, I have a question to ask you,”I said after a while.
“What?”she replied, still doing her work.
“Is there love between you and Dad?”I asked her in a very low voice.
My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. She didn't answer immediately. Then she bowed her head and continued to sew the quilt.
I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. I was in a great embarrassment and I didn't know what I should do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
“Susan,”she said thoughtfully,“Look at this thread. Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it's really there. Love is inside.”
I listened carefully but I couldn't understand her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly got sick seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked very pale. It seemed both of them had had a serious illness.
After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother helped my father walk slowly on the country road. My father had never been so gentle. It seemed they were the most harmonious couple. Along the country road, there were many beautiful flowers, green grass and trees. The sun gently glistened through the leaves. All of these made up the most beautiful picture in the world.
The doctor had said my father would recover in two months. But after two months he still couldn't walk by himself. All of us were worried about him.
“Dad, how are you feeling now?”I asked him one day.
“Susan, don't worry about me.”he said gently.“To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mom. I like this kind of life.”Reading his eyes, I know he loves my mother dee*.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. But from this experience, I understand that love is just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm..

I remember quite clearly now when the story happened. Well, I thought we were. But the truth was that you had been 2)longing to leave me, not daring to tell me. On that precious night, watching the lake, vaguely 3)conscious, you said: “Our story is ending.”
The rain was killing the last days of summer. You had been killing my last breath of love, since a long time ago. I still don’t think I’m gonna make it through another love story. You took it all away from me. And there I stand, I knew I was going to be the one left behind. But still I’m watching the lake, vaguely conscious, and I know my life is ending.

To be really happy and really safe, one ought to have at least two or three hobbies, and they must all be real. It is no use starting late in life to say: “I will take an interest in this or that.” Such an attempt only aggravates the strain of mental effort. A man may acquire great knowledge of topics unconnected with his daily work, and yet hardly get any benefit or relief. It is no use doing what you like; you have got to like what you do. Broadly speaking, human being may be pided into three classes: those who are toiled to death, those who are worried to death, and those who are bored to death. It is no use offering the manual laborer, tired out with a hard week’s sweat and effort, the chance of playing a game of football or baseball on Saturday afternoon. It is no use inviting the politician or the professional or business man, who has been working or worrying about serious things for six days, to work or worry about trifling things at the weekend.
It may also be said that rational, industrious, useful human beings are pided into two classes: first, those whose work is work and whose pleasure is pleasure; and secondly, those whose work and pleasure are one. Of these the former are the majority. They have their compensations. The long hours in the office or the factory bring with them as their reward, not only the means of sustenance, but a keen appetite for pleasure even in its simplest and most modest forms. But Fortune’s favored children belong to the second class. Their life is a natural harmony. For them the working hours are never long enough. Each day is a holiday, and ordinary holidays when they come are grudged as enforced interruptions in an absorbing vacation. Yet to both classes the need of an alternative outlook, of a change of atmosphere, of a persion of effort, is essential. Indeed, it may well be that those whose work is their pleasure are those who most need the means of banishing it at intervals from their minds.

My Favorite Fruit
In the first place it is a perennial—if not in actual fact, at least in the greengrocer's shop. On the days when dessert is a name given to a handful of chocolates and a little preserved ginger, when macedoine de fruits is the title bestowed on two prunes and a piece of rhubarbs, then the orange, however sour, comes nobly to the rescue; and on those other days of plenty when cherries and strawberries and raspberries, and gooseberries riot together upon the table, the orange, sweeter than ever, is still there to hold its own. Bread and butter, beef and mutton, eggs and bacon, are not more necessary to an order existence than the orange.
It is well that the commonest fruit should be also the best. Of the virtues of the orange I have not room fully to speak. It has properties of health giving, as that it cures influenza and establishes the complexion. It is clean, for whoever handles it on its way to your table, but handles its outer covering, its top coat, which is left in the hall. It is round, and forms an excellent substitute with the young for a cricket ball. The pip can be flicked at your enemies, and quite a small piece of peel makes a slide for an old gentleman.
But all this would count nothing had not the orange such delightful qualities of the taste. I dare not let myself go upon this subject. I am a slave to its sweetness. I grudge every marriage in that it means a fresh sup* of orange blossom, the promise of so much golden fruit cut short. However, the world must go on....
With the orange we do live year in and year out. That speaks well for the orange. The fact is that there is an honesty about the orange which appeals to all of us. If it is going to be bad—for the best of us are bad sometimes—it begins to be bad from the outside, not from the inside. How many a pear which presents a blooming face to the world is rotten at the core. How many an innocent-looking apple is harboring a worm in the bud. But the orange had no secret faults. Its outside is a mirror of its inside, and if you are quick you can tell the shop men so before he slips it into the bag.

Two Truths to Live by
The art of living is to know when to hold fast and when to let go. For life is paradox: it enjoins us to cling to its many gifts even while it ordains their eventual relinquishment. The rabbis of Old put it this way:" A man comes to this world with his fist clenched, but when he dies, his hand is open.
Surely we ought to hold fast to life, for it is wondrous, and full of a beauty that breaks through every pore of God’s own earth. We know that this is so, but all too often we recognize this truth only in our backward glance when we remember what it was and then suddenly realize that it is no more.
We remember a beauty that faded, a love that waned. But we remember with far greater pain that we did not see that beauty when it flowered, that we failed to respond with love when it was tendered.
This not an easy lesson to learn, especially when we are young and think that the world is ours to command, that whatever we desire with the full force of our passionate being can, nay, ill, be ours.
But then life moves along to confront us with realities, and slowly but surely this second truth dawns upon us. At every stage of life we sustain losses—and grow in the process. And ultimately, as the parable of the open and closed hand suggests, we must confront the inevitability of our own demise, losing ourselves as it were, all that we were or dreamed to be.
The insight gleaned from that experience is really as commonplace as was the experience itself: life’s gifts are precious--but we are too heedless of them.
Here then is the first pile of life's paradoxical demands on us: Never too busy for the wonder and the awe of life. Be reverent before each dawning day. Embrace each hour. Seize each golden minute.
Hold fast to life... but not so fast that you cannot let go. This is the second side of life's coin, the opposite pole of its paradox: we must accept our losses, and learn how to let go.

Night after night, she came to tuck me in, even long after my childhood years. Following her longstanding custom, she"d lean down and push my long hair out of the way, then kiss my forehead.
I don"t remember when it first started annoying me her hands pushing my hair that way. But it did annoy me, for they felt work-worn and rough against my young skin. Finally, one night, I lashed out at her: Don"t do that anymore your hands are too rough! She didn"t say anything in re*. But never again did my mother close out my day with that familiar expression of her love. Lying awake long afterward, my words haunted me. But pride stifled my conscience, and I didn"t tell her I was sorry.

when I first read this line by England's Poet Laureate, it startled me. What did Masefield mean? Without thinking about it much, I had always assumed that the opposite was true. But his sober assurance was arresting. I could not forget it.
Finally, I seemed to grasp his meaning and realized that here was a profound observation. The wisdom that happiness makes possible lies in clear perception, not fogged by anxiety nor dimmed by despair and boredom, and without the blind spots caused by fear.
Active happiness---not mere satisfaction or contentment ---often comes suddenly, like an April shower or the unfolding of a bud. Then you discover what kind of wisdom has accompanied it. The grass is greener; bird songs are sweeter; the shortcomings of your friends are more understandable and more forgivable. Happiness is like a pair of eyeglasses correcting your spiritual vision.

I remember quite clearly now when the story happened. The autumn leaves were floating in 1)measure down to the ground, recovering the lake, where we used to swim like children, under the sun was there to shine. That time we used to be happy.

"Mother, does the wind have a clear eye?" I asked my mother when I was a child.
"There are children, the wind will see you grow up, will give you the information coming from the mother, no matter where you are, I know your situation, because the wind's eyes to everything you told me," Mom heloma hand over my head.
Yes, the wind in the trees at the station always love, and like a mother, that is, loudly shouting my name, it was late, told me to go home. Sometimes, playing with children is just the rise, which is not heard or heard. The wind will whistle around the ear with the mother's voice. As the footprint keeps catching up, it will rush me to go home.
Don't guess, whether I'm in the hillside cattle in the river or ponds or bathing, the vegetable to steal another cucumber like, mother always through the wind to know where her son perception. I walk far, in the magnetic field of my mother's love. All my life can give me such a feeling, only my mother.
Wind, always changing their temperature and taste with the change of the season, change their color. Just after the winter, the wind is hurried away cold, with the warmth of spring information blowing through the hills, grass and woods I will spit out the green hills, slowly, wild flowers, pear, peach blossom also domesticated, full of vitality. At this time the wind, like a gorgeous girl, wearing the color clothes, bright red blossoms and green willows, quiet and tranquil, with the fragrance of the flowers, but drunk in their own style. My childhood, seems to have unlimited power, always love to see the mountains green flowers, spring breeze soaked heart, like spring grass, grow up quickly. The mother knew her son's mind, from time to time to pick the grass field to go home, let the house is full of grass fresh breath, infiltration of my young heart.
In the summer, the heat in the wind was inflated rapidly, and a burning sensation on the face, rippling and rippling. With a bit of mystery and pride, the mind in the face, and pretending to be calm, the people of rice mature information to the village, they quickly rush in the harvest at the same time to harvest, planting. In the field work day and night hot can not sleep, a person with straw series fan, palm Qingnie fan handle, violently shaking. The mother was asleep, the fan in his hand was still shaking gently, fixed on my body, and fanning the coolness on me.
The autumn wind heat slowly reduced, crop fields gradually mature, the rice into the warehouse, the sweet potato bulging, less tired mother and flustered. When light still, mother took a dim dim kerosene lamp on the table, the whole family, old and young around the table every mouthful taste, rice and vegetables are full of warm and fragrant. In the flickering flames, mother skillfully in the pot washing the dishes, I dare not half a step away from the mother, for fear of the night on a hand or body of the ghost, I will catch, can not go back to the mother.
The seasons in the wind, the most natural number is also the winter, winter cold, biting north wind to blow too timid. The mother got up early rice in cold water washing, the sun climbed to the top of the mountain, the sun brings warmth melts the ice, the mother will call my name, hiding in bed I slowly will head out, should be a mother, mother wore hand sewn fabric thick cotton padded jacket. In addition to face frozen red, body heat is not worse than in summer, because the jacket is woven with motherly love, cold fear it, hide away.
The wind in the mountain is filled with the mother's care and warmth to his son. In some sense, it is a high flag of mother's love.
I came to the city from the wind in the mountains, to leave the hometown 19 years of living in the city, always feel the wind a little strange feeling and taste, less fresh and natural and pure mountain wind, and stuffy and unnerving, can not find the criteria for life, less rational, but not out begging. The rain beat free wilderness.
Mother always unwilling to live in the city with me, always wanted to stay in the village, although nearly seventy years, still in the wind with rain in the kitchen busy work room. And the wind is also busy to keep my mother from me to keep the innocent information of the children in the mountain. I am afraid that I will lose my way and set up a benchmark in my heart.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep spring of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideas.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. An inpidual human existence should be like a river—small at first, narrowly contained within its banks, and rushing passionately past boulders and over waterfalls. Gradually the river grows wider, the banks recede, the waters flow more quietly, and in the end, without any visible break, they become merged in the sea, and painlessly lose their inpidual being.

What is love?
An elf sits between the green branches and leaves.
The wind not much, if any.
A bird flew over and stopped on the branch, looking at the rice field that was going to mature in the distance.
Asked the spirit took out a bunch of glistening rice: "do you love this rice?"
"Love."
"Why?"
"It drives me out of hunger."
The bird pecked the rice, gently comb its feathers.
"Do you love this rice now?" The elves took out a bunch of glistening rice.
The bird looked up at a fountain in the distance and answered, "now I love the Bay spring, and I'm a little thirsty."
The elves took off a leaf, and there was a fountain of water in it.
The bird finished the spring and was ready to fly away.
"Please answer me one more question," the elves put out their fingertips, and the birds stopped on it.
"What more important things are you going to do?" I also have spring in the rice. "
"I'm going to the valleys with the hyacinth to see the hyacinth."
"Why?" Can it drive away your hunger? "
"No,"
"Can it moisturize your thirst?"
"No,"
"Then why are you going to see it?"
"I need it."
"Why do you need it?"
"I love it."
"Why do you love it?"
"I miss it all day and night."
"Why do you miss it?"
"I love it."
The elves have been silent for a moment and put forward a question.
"Why do you only love that one of the hyacinth? There are numerous hyacinth in the valley. "
"Because it's the only one."
"Why?" Is it different from all the other hyacinth? "
"Yes."
"Where is the difference?"
"Only it is the one I love."
The elves suddenly laughed and the birds fluttered away.

In a famous church in Seattle, there is a prestigious clergyman - Dale Taylor. One day, he told the following story to a class of students in the church school.
That winter, the hunter went hunting with a hunting dog. The hind legs of a rabbit hunter shot and injured rabbit tried to escape, the dogs were subsequently pursued. But after a while, the rabbit ran farther and farther. Dogs know it is not catch up, but bitterly hunters return to the side. Hunter said angrily: "you are really useless, even an injured rabbit have not catch!"
The hound defended, "I've done my best to do it!"
Besides, the rabbit came home successfully with gunshot wounds. The brothers came around and asked him in surprise. "The hunting dog is very fierce. How did you take it away?"
The rabbit said, "it is to do our best, I do my best!" It didn't catch me up to get a scolding, and if I don't try to run, but would have died!"
When the Reverend Taylor finished the story to the class, and solemnly promise: if who can recite the "Bible Matthew" in the fifth chapter to the seventh chapter of the entire contents, he was invited to Seattle who "space needle" restaurant tower will attend the free dinner.
There are tens of thousands of words in the fifth and seventh chapters of the gospel of the Bible. There is no doubt that it is difficult to recite the full text of the full text of the gospel. Although many students will attend the free dinner is the dream of things, but almost everyone to check, from.
A few days later, a 11 year old boy in front of the class, standing in the answers to the Reverend Taylor, from A to Z required to recite, even not a word, not a little mistake, but in the end, it became extremely rich recite.
Clergyman Taylor is more aware than others that among adult believers it is also rare to recite these pages, not to be a child. At the same time, while praising the boy's amazing memory, Taylor asked, "why do you have such a long word?"
The boy replied without thinking, "I do my best."
16 years later, the boy became the boss of the world's famous software company. He is Bill Gate.
The story of pastor Taylor and Bill Gate's successful recitation are very inspiring to people: everyone has great potential. As psychologists have pointed out, most people only develop the potential of about 2-8, a great scientist as great as Einstein, also developed only about 12. If a person has developed 50 potential, we can recite 400 textbooks, completion of more than 10 university courses, also can acquire 20 different national languages. That is to say, we have 90 of our potential still in a state of sleep. It is not enough for anyone who wants to be outstanding and miraculous. It is far from enough to do the best.

On beauty
美
Where shall you seek beauty, and how shall you find her unless she herself be your way and your guide? And how shall you speak of her except she be the weaver of your speech?
The aggrieved and the injured say, "Beauty is kind and gentle. Like a young mother half-shy of her own glory she walks among us."
And the passionate say, "Nay, beauty is a thing of might and dread. Like the tempest she shakes the earth beneath us and the sky above us."
The tired and the weary say, "Beauty is of soft whisperings. She speaks in our spirit. Her voice yields to our silences like a faint light that quivers in fear of the shadow."
But the restless say, "We have heard her shouting among the mountains, and with her cries came the sound of hoofs, and the beating of wings and the roaring of lions."
At night the watchmen of the city say, "Beauty shall rise with the dawn from the east."
And at noon-time the toilers and the wayfarers say, "We have seen her leaning over the earth from the windows of the sunset."
In winter say the snow-bound, "She shall come with the spring leaping upon the hills."
And in the summer heat the reapers say, "We have seen her dancing with the autumn leaves, and we saw a drift of snow in her hair."
All these things have you said of beauty, yet in truth you spoke not of her but of needs unsatisfied, and beauty is not a need but an *******. It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty haand stretched forth, but rather a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted. It is not the image you would see nor the song you would hear, but rather an image you see though you close your eyes and a song you hear though you shut your ears. It is not the sap within the furrowed bark, nor a wing attached to a claw, but rather a garden for ever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight.
Beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.

No young man believes he shall ever die. It was a saying of my brother’s, and a fine one. There is a feeling of Eternity in youth, which makes us amend for everything. To be young is to be as one of the Immortal Gods. One half of time indeed is flown-the other half remains in store for us with all its countless treasures; for there is no line drawn, and we see no limit to our hopes and wishes. We make the coming age our own -- The vast, the unbounded prospect lies before us
Death. old age. are words without a meaning. that pass by us like the idea air which we regard not. Others may have undergone, or may still be liable to them-we "bear a charmed life”, which laughs to scorn all such sickly fancies. As in setting out on delightful journey, we strain our eager gaze forward- Bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail!-and see no end to the landscape, new objects presenting themselves as we advance; so, in the commencement of life, we set no bounds to our inclinations. nor to the unrestricted opportunities of gratifying them. we have as yet found no obstacle, no disposition to flag; and it seems that we can go on so forever. We look round in a new world, full of life, and motion, and ceaseless progress; and feel in ourselves all the vigor and spirit to keep pace with it, and do not foresee from any present symptoms how we shall be left behind in the natural course of things, decline into old age, and drop into the grave. It is the simplicity, and as it were abstractedness of our feelings in youth, that (so to speak) identifies us with nature, and (our experience being slight and our passions strong) deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it. Our short-lives connection with existence we fondly flatter ourselves, is an indissoluble and lasting union-a honeymoon that knows neither coldness, jar, nor separation. As infants smile and sleep, we are rocked in the cradle of our wayward fancies, and lulled into security by the roar of the universe around us. we quaff the cup of life with eager haste without draining it, instead of which it only overflows the more objects press around us, filling the mind with their magnitude and with the strong of desires that wait upon them, so that we have no room for the thoughts of death.

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a great ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.
I have sought love, first, because it brings ******* - ******* so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness--that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what--at last--I have found.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate this evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.
This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.
