　　龜兔賽跑

　　The hare was once boasting of his speed before the other animals. "I have never been beaten," he said, "when I run at full speed, no one is faster than me."

　　The tortoise said quietly, "I will race with you." "That is a good joke," said the hare. "I could dance around you the whole way."

　　The race started. The hare darted almost out of sight at once. He soon stopped and lay down to have a nap.

　　The tortoise plodded on and on. When the hare awoke from his nap, he saw the tortoise was near the finish line, and that he had lost the race.

　　In the Warring States Period(戰(zhàn)國)， Duke Wei of Qi neglectedstate affairs， for the first three years of his reign， giving himself over to dissipation.

　　戰(zhàn)國時期，齊威王繼承王位已有三年了，可是他整天飲酒作樂，不理朝政。

　　One of his minister， Chun Yukun(chn y kūn)who had a good senseof humor， said to him：”There is a big bird which has never taken wing nor sung for three r Highness， may you guess what kind of bird is it?”

　　有一個大臣叫淳于髡，很有幽默感，對齊威王說：“臣聽說齊國有一只大鳥，三年來不飛也不叫，大王知道這是一只什么鳥?”

　　The dukeanswered， “Once that bird starts to fly and sing， it will astonishthe world.”

　　(其實淳于髡是暗喻齊威王)齊威王答道：“一旦這只鳥開始飛翔高歌，必然震驚世界。”

　　The duke then devoted himself to his duties and built his state up into a powerfulone.
