Most companies use telephone interviews as part of their recruitmentprocess to whittle down a pile of CVs into a manageable interview shortlist. Butmany candidates fluff the opportunity to create a good impression and secure aface-to-face meeting.
Many applicants fail to take telephone interviews seriously, and risklosing out as a result, according to a recent survey. Recruiters reportedcandidates eating, driving, bathing, breastfeeding, dogwalking and even going tothe loo during telephone interviews.
Recruiters also bemoaned the use of slang and street talk: calling yourinterviewer ‘mate' or finishing sentences with ‘innit' is not a winningstrategy.
Here are my top tips on performing strongly during telephoneinterviews.
Do:
1.Prepare yourself for the call as you would for a face-to-faceinterview.
2.Choose a quiet place to take the call, with no risk of interruption orbackground noise.
3.Pay as much attention to listening as to speaking.
4.Call from a landline to minimise the chance of interference or lostconnection.
5.Take things slowly –there is no need to rush.
Don't:
1.Do something else while talking on the phone –give the call your fullattention.
2.Fail to take the interview seriously –it's your opportunity to make agood impression.
3.Forget to listen and respond to the interviewer's questions.
4.Portray a poor telephone manner –remember, you are trying to impress.
5.Exhibit a lack of enthusiasm –the interviewer expects to hear that youwant this job.
The outcome of your interview is often decided before you even step intothe interview room. Preparation is the key for successful interviews. Below aresome simple guidelines to help you prepare for your next interview.
Before the Interview
Be sure to take time beforehand to make sure that you are comfortable withnot only what, but how you will present yourself during the interview. You alsowill benefit from taking the hour before the interview to relax completely andput your mind at ease.
2. Do Your Homework
You can never know too much about an industry, a company, its competitors, and all relevant news. Doing your homework can often decide the fate of yourinterview before you even step foot in the office.
The Day of the Interview
1. Punctuality 準(zhǔn)時(shí)
Three words: Don’t Be Late. Tardiness is inexcusable.
2 Appearance 穿著
As a rule of thumb, one can never be overdressed. That being said, you willalways want to go classy-conservative, which for women means business suit(slacks are generally preferable to skirts), and for men means deep base color(black or navy blue).
During the Interview
1. The First Impression
You must set the tone of your interview in the first thirty seconds. Youwill want to establish a couple of elevator pitches beforehand. Imagine that youare in an elevator and you only have a few floors to make a positive, lastingimpression.
2. Understand Your Audience
Read your interviewer carefully. Does he/she seem very conservative?Extremely outgoing? Make sure that your attitude reflects and complements yourinterviewer’s.
You are your own brand, and the interview is your chance to sell yourself.Make sure to do things like look the potential employer in the eye whilespeaking and to refer to your potential employer by his/her first (or last)name.
After the Interview
The Follow-up Letter
Write a letter to the interviewer following your interview, making sure tosummarize what you talked about and mentioning again how you could benefit theorganization. Never miss a chance to say again why you are the perfect personfor the job!
