Once a circle missed a wedge. The circle wanted to be whole,so it went around looking for its missing piece. But because it was incomplete and therefore could roll only very slowly,it admired the flowers along the way.It chatted with worms. It enjoyed the sunshine. It found lots of different pieces, but none of them fit.So it left them all by the side of the road and kept on searching. Then one day the circle found a piece that fit perfectly. It was so happy. Now it could be whole, with nothing missing. It incorporated the missingpiece into itself and began to roll. Now that it was a perfect circle,it could roll very fast, too fast tonotice the flowers or talking to the worms. When it realized how different the world seemed when it rolled so quickly,it stopped, left its found piece by the side of the road and rolled slowly away.
The lesson of the story,I suggested, was that in some strange sense we are more whole when we are missingsomething. The man who has everything is in some ways a poor man.He will never know what it feels like to yearn,to hope,to nourish his soul with the dream of something better. He will never know the experience ofhaving someone who loves him give him something he has always wanted or never had.
There is a wholeness about the person who has come to terms with his limitations, who has been brave enough to let go of his unrealistic dreams and not feel like a failure for doing so.There is a wholeness about the man or woman who has learned that he or she is strong enough to go through a tragedy and survive, who can lose someone and still feel like a complete person.
Life is not a trap set for us by God so that he can condemn us for failing.Life is not a spelling bee, where no matter how many words you've gotten right, you're disqualified if you make one mistake.Life ismore like a baseball season, where even the best team loses one-third of its games and even the worst team has its days of brilliance. Our goal is to win more games than we lose.
When we accept that imperfection is part of being human, and when we can continue rolling through life andappreciate it,we will have achieved a wholeness that others can only aspire to.That,I believe,is what God asks of us not "Be perfect",not "Don't even make a mistake",but "Be whole."
If we are brave enough to love, strong enough to forgive, generous enough to rejoice in another's happiness, and wise enough to know there is enough love to go around for us all, then we can achieve a fulfillmentthat no other living creature will ever know.
Home
What makes a home? Love and sympathy andconfidence.
It is a place where kindly affections exist among allthe members of the family. The parents take goodcare of their children, and the children are interestedin the activities of their parents. Thus all of them arebound together by affection, and they find their home to be the cheeriest place in the world.
A home without love is no more a home than a body without a soul is a man. Every civilizedperson is a social being. No one should live alone. A man may lead a successful and prosperouslife, but prosperity alone can by no means insure happiness.
Many great personages in the world history had deep affections for their homes. Your homemay be poor and humble, but your duty lies there. You should try to make it cheerful andcomfortable. The greater the difficulties, the richer will be your reward. A home is more than afamily dwelling. It is a school in which people are trained for citizenship. A man will not rendergood service to his country if he can do nothing good for his home; for in proportion as heloves his home, will he love his country. The home is the birthplace of true patriotism. It is thesecret of social welfare and national greatness. It is the basis and origin of civilization.
Youth
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it isnot a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips andsuppleknees; it is a matter of the will, a quality ofthe imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is thefreshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a tempera-mental predominance ofcourage over timidity, of the appetite foradventure over thelove of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20.Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust.
Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailingchildlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heartand my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice ofpessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catchwaves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.
