Faced with the question whether it is worthwhile to spend a year or two voluntee?ring in western China, many college students would probably shake their heads, seeing it as a waste of valuable learning time. However, I will give an affirmative answer without hesitation, because this experience can apparently benefit us in many ways.
First, it is a great opportunity for us to ap* the knowledge we have acquired at college. Different from temporary part-time jobs, a longer volunteer work experience is truly fulfilling and rewarding. As English majors, we can learn to use and teach the language effectively in real classes; as education majors, we can experiment with those textbook theories in helping manage a school or instruct the younger; those who study engineering can take this chance to turn their ideas and skills into running machines, new bridges and broad roads. From this experience, we will better understand our schoolwork and even build up considerable expertise in our chosen fields.
Second, we can gain a great sense of satisfaction by making contributions in an underdeveloped region. Right now, the western China is suffering from both the short?age of resources and that of talents in its course of development. If we can step into the needed roles by sim* sacrificing a year or two, we will be able to make some differ?ence to the situation as a whole. Imagine how proud you will be when telling your fami?ly and friends how you have taught the illiterate to read, and how you have helped to change the look of a backward town. Compared with the great sense of pride you feel, a year's time is just a small price to pay.
Third,we can establish a deep friendship with local people. On the one hand, if you truly love and help the people you work with, they naturally love and help you back. Take a senior I know for example, who served two months as a teacher in a dry northwestern town. During the period of water shortage, both his students and their parents voluntarily kept water for him, sometimes despite their own need. Recalling his days there, he said they were not easy but he could not help missing them. Probably many volunteers would feel the same as him. While we are giving care, support and help, we often get back more including a lasting friendship.
Therefore,I will readily sign up to volunteer in the western China despite various challenges I may meet. Think of the differences we can make there and the changes this experience can make to us, why not walk out of the ivory tower and step onto the promising land of our country?

*的禮儀文化
Throughout most of China’s long history, therelationships between people were based on carefullyprescribed forms of behavior, that is,etiquette.Learning and following etiquette is soimportant that people are always judged by howclosely they follow these rules of behaviors. For thosewho do not follow those prescribed rules of conduct, they are regarded as uncivilizedbarbarians.
However,as China has been increasingly entangled in the global village, many Chinese people, especially the young, have lost some traditions because of the influences of Western cultures.According to a famous professor, the majority of Chinese college students have not hadsystematic training on traditional Chinese etiquette. As for me, traditional etiquette shouldbe taught in class.
Firstly, if college students can receive a systematic education in traditional etiquette inclass, they can get more prepared for the future. As is known, college students usually havelearnt some traditional etiquette through daily interaction with friends and relatives, but theprocess is time-consuming. They have to be sensitive enough to observe other people’sbehaviors and then know what proper behaviors in different social situations are. Sometimesthe learning process is by trial and error. They can only form right behaviors after breaking therules of conduct and being corrected by the costly consequence. If they have already taken asystematic etiquette course in college, they can follow proper etiquette and have a moreguaranteed future.
Secondly, as these meticulous rules of conduct have been formed throughout Chinesehistory, they are unique Chinese characteristics and are inseparable to Chinese culture.Withthe advent of globalization ,western culture is so influential that many young people often lookto Western customs and etiquette as being fashionable. For example, nowadays most youngwomen in China would like to wear western-style white dresses and veils at wedding whiletraditional Chinese weddings feature red gowns for brides and white is an absolute taboo. Inthe long term,if the trend to adopt western etiquette can not be curbed, the Chinesegenerations in the future will lose their cultural identity.
Furthermore, the extinction of Chinese etiquette will be to the detriment of the persity ofglobal culture. To some extent, the course can serve to arouse college students’ cultural prideand help to preserve and further develop Chinese culture. In conclusion, taking traditionalChinese etiquette in college will not only make graduates more prepared for their future, butalso can constitute an important measure for college studentsto form Chinese culturalidentity and therefore to preserve Chinese tradition and further develop it.

Going to class also teaches students responsibility and discipline. Having to be at a particular place at a particular time prepares them for getting a job. Being at a place on time with an assignment completed prepares them for a career.
In short, by going to class students learn more than just information from the teacher. They also learn how to learn, how to work with others, and how to work responsibly. These are not optional skills in life, so attending classes should not be optional in college.
Clear Your Mental Space
Think about the last time you felt a negative emotion-like stress, anger, or frustration. What was going through your mind as you were going through that negativity? Was your mind cluttered with thoughts? Or was it paralyzed, unable to think?
The next time you find yourself in the middle of a very stressful time, or you feel angry or frustrated, stop. Yes, that’s right, stop. Whatever you’re doing, stop and sit for one minute. While you’re sitting there, completely immerse yourself in the negative emotion.
Allow that emotion to consume you. Allow yourself one minute to truly feel that emotion. Don’t cheat yourself here. Take the entire minute---but only one minute---to do nothing else but feel that emotion.
When the minute is over, ask yourself, “Am I wiling to keep holding on to this negative emotion as I go through the rest of the day?”
Once you’ve allowed yourself to be totally immersed in the emotion and really fell it, you will be surprised to find that the emotion clears rather quickly.
If you feel you need to hold on to the emotion for a little longer, that is OK. Allow yourself another minute to feel the emotion.
When you feel you’ve had enough of the emotion, ask yourself if you’re willing to carry that negativity with you for the rest of the day. If not, take a deep breath. As you exhale, release all that negativity with your breath.
This exercise seems simple---almost too simple. But, it is very effective. By allowing that negative emotion the space to be truly felt, you are dealing with the emotion rather than stuffing it down and trying not to feel it. You are actually taking away the power of the emotion by giving it the space and attention it needs. When you immerse yourself in the emotion, and realize that it is only emotion, it loses its control. You can clear your head and proceed with your task.
Try it. Next time you’re in the middle of a negative emotion, give yourself the space to feel the emotion and see what happens. Keep a piece of paper with you that says the following:
Stop. Immerse for one minute. Do I want to keep this negativity? Breath deep, exhale, release. Move on!
This will remind you of the steps to the process. Remember; take the time you need to really immerse yourself in the emotion. Then, when you feel you’ve felt it enough, release it---really let go of it. You will be surprised at how quickly you can move on from a negative situation and get to what you really want to do!

A Factory near the Neighborhood
Having a factory near where one lives brings with it both advantages and disadvantages. An obvious advantage is an increase in the number of available jobs, and many people in the community might find employment in the new factory. The factory would bring money into the community in other ways as well. It would have to pay some taxes to the local government, and workers might go shopping or eat at a restaurant in the area before or after their shifts.
However, the factory would bring some disadvantages, too. Depending on what kind of factory it is, it might pollute the environment and bring down property values. It would be sure to increase traffic in the area, causing congestion and making it unsafe for children to play outside. Finally, the neighborhood would become a noisy, busy place. For all of these reasons, I would be opposed to the construction of a new factory near my community. While the employment opportunities would help the community, I believe it would be better for residents to commute to work and preserve the peace of our neighborhood.

TREAT STUDENTS AS ADULTS, NOT CHILDREN
Some time ago, China’s Ministry of Education banned university students from renting private accommodation during their studies. This has given rise to a heated discussion. Some people, especially school management and most parents, embrace such a ban, while others criticize it fiercely. Personally, I am against the ban.
First, most college students are *s and should enjoy the right to choose where to live. In banning off-campus housing, the education authorities seem to believe that college students, most aged 18-22, should be treated as children, rather than *s. Some administrators claim that students lack self-control and cannot make proper decisions for themselves. This is surely not fair treatment for such a bright young generation. If these students didn’t attend colleges, but worked in companies or joined the army, they would be treated as *s.
Secondly, private accommodation is indeed preferable to living on campus for many students. It is true that living on campus promotes a sense of belonging by being closely connected with other students. This could truly be a valuable part of the four-year college education. Students living on campus also have easier access to vast school resources, such as libraries, com*r rooms and various evening seminars. But crowded dormitories, high noise levels, early electricity curfews and other strict codes also make dorms less attractive. At least dorms are not the right home for everyone. Off-campus housing, meanwhile, offers a greater degree of freedom. That is especially true for self-motivated students, students studying late for important tests or working late on academic projects. Many students living off-campus also share rooms. They have to negotiate contracts, pay utilities and probably cook for themselves. All help prepare students to better manage their study and life. In fact this also conforms to most schools’ creed that students should be in touch with the real world as much as possible.
One of the motives for the housing ban is that education authorities hope this will help prevent students from cohabitation and having sex during school years. But since students can now legally marry in schools, why should they be banned from having sex? Reality tells us that this is wishful thinking. Banning sex among students has been and will be a mission impossible. This is probably why some schools have installed condom vending machines on campus or provide free condoms in school clinics, which tells students to have safe sex, rather than no sex.
To sum up, we should treat students as *s instead of children. Though there might be problems in allowing students to leave off campus, we should not give up eating for fear of choking, as the Chinese idiom says. In today’s persified world, schools should show respect to students in making their own choices. After all, schools are not military barracks and students are not soldiers.
英語專八作文8
Some people are committed to their dreams and work hard to achieve their goals. What is guiding them is a kind of illusion. Some people think that illusion is good for success while others argue that it is not so good because it may get people unrealistic. As far as I am concerned, illusion is necessary in our life only if it is encouraging and realistic.
There are several reasons.First of all, there is power in illusion. The illusion can lead people to the path they want to go on and it gives us passion. We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses so that we can find pleasure in the fragrance of backyard garden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, and the enchanting beauty of a rainbow. The illusion can be enthusiastic love of life that puts sparkle in our eyes, a lilt in our steps and smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.
Secondly, we are born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder as anyone knows who has ever seen an infant’s delight at the jingle of keys or the scurrying of a beetle. It is this childlike wonder and illusion that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, no matter how old they are. For example, the famous cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach. Music, for him, was an elixir that made life a never-ending adventure. As author and poet Samuel once wrote, “Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”
Lastly, people with illusions also love what they do, regardless of money or power or title. If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as do a part-time vocation, like the head of state who paints, the nun who runs marathons and the executive who handcrafts furniture. We cannot afford to waste tears and energy and time on “might-h(huán)ave-beens”. We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”.
To sum up, God gives each bird its food, but he does not throw it into its nest. Wherever you want to go, just cherish your precious illusion and let your dream be realized.

When we go on a business trip,we will be faced with the choice between traveling by train or by plane. Before making the right choice,we had better make a close comparison and contrast of them.
First of all,a train will take us to our target railway station. Also,a plane will take us to the target airport.Second,in a train we can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the countryside.Likewise,in a plane we can command a good view of fields, buildings, mountains and even clouds below.Despite their similarities, traveling by train or by plane are also different in the following aspects.First,a train ticket is less expensive. Most of us can afford it.However,a plane ticket is about twice as expensive as a train ticket. Most of us grudge paying for it.Besides, it is safer to travel by train. If the train gets into trouble,we may survive by jumping out of it.On the contrary,if we travel by plane,we have to ask God to bless us.Finally,it takes us longer time to travel by train than by plane.
Therefore,it depends which transportation tool we should choose. If we just want to save money,we will travel by train;but if we want to save time,we should turn to the plane.

Laozihao is not only the commercial phenomenon, but also the history in miniature. It is popular for its unique arts and crafts. However, some of these enterprises have become outdated or are operating in red dueto a rigid conventional thinking, loose management or overstaffing.People have different opinions about whether the Laozihao should be preserved or not. As far as I’m concerned, the critical point is not only toremain but also to preserve and develop the Laozihao. Laozihao is important to the traditional culture andthe national commerce. As a time-honored brand, Laozihao enjoys the extensive reputation in the society. It is of golden opinion, and carries the trust of the customers. Moreover, it is the precise non-material cultural heritage. The city without Laozihao will lose the unique scene as a famous historic city.
In the market-oriented economic society, Laozihao satisfies the emotional need of people for the national culture. But it cannot be denied that now Laozihao are paying their way. Affected by the market-oriented economy, Laozihao are taking the shine off. The out-dated concepts, old-fashioned products and backward management are all the factors for the fall of Laozihao. As for the fact, we should not only remain the Laozihao, but also have to preserve and develop it.
First, the support system of Laozihao should be built up. The advanced technology, automatic intellectual property rights and modern organization are key points in the development of Laozihao. On the basis of keeping its traditional features, it should work out new products, which are more suitable for the modern society, so as to extend the market share. Second, Laozihao should have the priority in the policy and finance. It is the most important embodiment of a historic city. So In the urban planning, the original locationshould be preserved. And the government would finance them to improve their technology and equipments. Third, it is suggested that Laozihao should be preserved as the intangible assets of the country. In this way, Laozihao will do good to the cultural landscape as well as develop its own commercial function.
In conclusion, Laozihao is the carrier of the traditional culture and arts. It’s a symbol of the nationalhistory. We should preserve it and use effective ways to develop it. It is not only the demand of the market, but also the requirement of the culture.

Delivery Ability ******* or the Contents?
In college,it is claimed that students are given the right to select their courses in line with their personal preferences. But,in actuality, college students have to take some compulsory courses and some required selective courses. On those occasions, professors will find in their lectures students are absent-minded and hence interactions with students in class can not be easily achieved. Some people think that if professors are eloquent enough and have excellent delivery ability, their class will be interesting.Forthese students, the contents of professors’lectures seem less important. However,we can not simply assume that which one is more important than the other. We should make specific ****ysis.
Firstly what ******* is undoubtedly the contents for students. In compulsory courses or selective courses, students are required to acquire basic knowledge or want to learn what interests them. It is ridiculousto suspect that professors are disqualified. When professors can stand in front of students and are givinglectures, they are experienced and know more than students after years of research and teaching. For college students, they are required to attentively listen to professors and take notes so that they canimprovethemselves. In this sense, when students are busy absorbing what professors are instructing in class, they will become less fussy about professors’delivery skills.
Secondly, for professors,it is their responsibility to have a full preparation for lectures and to deliver effectively the contents of their lectures to student. While the contents can fulfill students’needs, excellent delivery skills will arouse students’interest and hold their attention for a long time.Given the fact that students can not select their favorite courses according to their own interests and preferences, professors should make more efforts to prepare for lectures.Of course, each professor has formed his own style after years of teaching. But students in different periods have different characters andneeds;professors can not simply apply their styles to all students. While students in the past might regard professors’ delivery style funny, current students are likely to dislike the style and consider it outdated and manipulative.
On all accounts, as we can reach different conclusion from different perspectives, we can not simply determine delivery ability *******more than the contents or vice verse. While interesting teaching styles andcontent-loaded contents make professors popular among students, college students should not forget that they are required to acquire knowledge in class.

Book Knowledge vs. Experience
Knowledge can be acquired from many sources. These include books, teachers and practical experience, and each has its own advantages. The knowledge we gain from books and formal education enables us to learn about things that we have no opportunity to experience in daily life. We can study all the places in the world and learn from people we will never meet in our lifetime, just by reading about them in books. We can also develop our ****ytical skills and learn how to view and interpret the world around us in different ways. Furthermore, we can learn from the past by reading books. In this way, we won’t repeat the mistakes of others and can build on their achievements.
Practical experience, on the other hand, can give us more useful knowledge. It is said that one learns best by doing, and I believe that this is true, whether one is successful or not. In fact, I think making mistakes is the best way to learn. Moreover, if one wants to make new advances, it is necessary to act. Innovations do not come about through reading but through experimentation. Finally, one can apply the skills and insights gained through the study of books to practical experience, making an already meaningful experience more meaningful. However, unless it is applied to real experiences, book knowledge remains theoretical and, in the end, is useless. That is why I believe that knowledge gained from practical experience is more important than that acquired from books.

Competition is a common phenomenon in our society . We compete when we play games, we try to do better than others in our study, and there is constant competition for jobs, fame, wealth and so forth. Therefore,we can say that, in a certain sense, competition is one of the motive forces of the development of our modern society.
It is often believed, that competition and cooperation are in opposition to each other. Some people stress competition, without which, in their eyes, there is no responsibility, no drive and ultimately, no progress. Others advocate cooperation whatever they do. They are of the opinion that the dependence of people on one another has increased, without which the society we live in can not keep going smoothly. In reality, we find that in many cases competition goes hand in hand with cooperation. Lets take a football game for example. During the game, one team is competing against the other, but each member of the team must cooperate with his teammates. Otherwise, they would lose the game no matter how skillful each inpidual player might be. It is clear that competition has much to do with cooperation.
As far as I’m concerned, I do not agree with the view that competition and cooperation are always in conflict with each other. In my opinion, while advocating competition. We should never forget cooperation. In our social life, cooperation is especially necessary because most work is fulfilled with or through other people. So Ive come to the conclusion that competition are equally important.

In spite of this, quite a few people firmly believe that Korean soap operas are ridiculous and simplistic, in other words, they deem that watching such TV plays is a waste of time and youth.Such people feel that the characters, who were born rich and handsome, are dreamed up and can not be found in real society,so they feel that it is meaningless and even naive to watch the soap operas.
Taking into all these featuresmentioned above, we can draw a conclusion that
Korean soap operas have bothpositive and negative effects just as a coin has two sides. From my ownperspective, we can watch them and find the TVcharacters we like, but we have to keep our own identity and tradition. 我們可以看韓劇,找到喜歡的角色,但是我們必須保持自己民族的特點(diǎn)和傳統(tǒng)。

專四英語作文7
Just as is revealed in the pictures above, people are generally classified into two types: the pessimistic and the optimistic. We can see in one picture some people, long-faced and downhearted, are counting the nights by the shadows while in the other picture the happy-go-lucky people are enjoying the starry nights. What a contrastive view! Remember, it is not the bad thing that determines our state of mind but the way we look at it *. (描述點(diǎn)題段) (以小到大)
An example that comes to mind is SARS cr**** that has recently torn apart and ravaged most of China. Admittedly, it has cost us quite a lot. Some people suffered from health damage and still some even lost their lives. And our economy suffers a temporary setback and a slowdown. However, we still have learnt and benefited a lot from it. (舉例說明段) 4. First things first, we are more concerned than never before with our health, and the environment we live in. Additionally, we tried and bettered and are still bettering our mechanism to respond to unexpected crises. These and other lessons at the expense of blood, tear, toil and sweat are benefiting and continue to benefit us and generations of Chinese to come. (分析問題段)
The best way to overcome the frustrations brought about crises is to always take a positive outlook on life. Just as a well-known ancient Chinese notion goes, the past lessons if not forgotten are good teachers for us all. If we can bear in mind sufferings and ordeals we have experienced, then our sufferings will not go unrewarded. (前瞻感言段)

專四英語作文9
Books are close friends of humanity. They can arm us with knowledge and information we need to make success of life. Through books we can obtain skills and techniques for survival and development. Through books we can enlighten our spirits and live a fuller life. There are generally two ways in which we can have access to books: borrowing or buying. While millions are borrowing books, I still think buying them best suits me and gives me the greatest enjoyment.
Admittedly, there are a few merits for borrowing books. For one thing, borrowing books can save us huge amounts of money. And of course, with the money saved we can do other more worthy things .And also, as we borrow books from the library and friends, we normally have deadline to finish them, and consequently we can read more books in a limited time. And we can, above all, better our efficiency of our reading, just as a famous Chinese saying goes, “books can not be read unless borrowed.”
However, some advantages for buying books are more obvious and compelling. One of them, definitely not shared by the choice of borrowing books, is the abundance of freedom that buying books can offer us. Since we can keep the books as long as we wish, we can read as much as we want. Another strength of owing books is that we can take whatever notes on the margin of the pages of the books. And finally, the process of selecting and keeping books can be a great fun that borrowing books can by no means offer.
While borrowing books can, to some extent, quench our thirst for knowledge, buying books gives us greater pleasure of selecting and keeping the best of the world treasure. Can we think of any thing else more delightful and rewarding?

Are dialects just as acceptable in public places?
China’s State Administration of Radio Film and Television (SARFT) recently issued a notice banning domestic radio and TV stations from translating foreign radio and TV programmes into any local dialect. The notice said that such dialect translation contradicts the national initiative to promote Putonghua, or Mandarin, around the country. Foreign programmes that have been translated into dialects must be removed from television and radio immediately. The notice evoked a mixed response from experts and audio and video producers, as well as the general public. Many voiced their concerns that local dialects would be fornidden in public places. Mandarian, which means "common language", is the country’s predominant language and is widely used by more than 70 percent of the population. However, local dialects still enjoy popularity for relatively less-educated people in some occasions. The dialects do make unique role and should be tolerated for existence in public places. Though promoted widely in public places, dialects are acceptable in public places. First, it is more than a mere tool for communication. It is, most importantly, the messenger of its respective culture. If the dialect was eliminated from daily use, the culture will be broken. Second, Mandarian can absorb the elite part of local dialect to enrich its vocabulary and usage. This is the perfection of Mandartian from thousands of years blend and contact. The dialects can also be popular in the public. Along with the famous short play by comic actors in NE China, the local dialect came into the spotlight, and enjoyed more popularity throughout China. Such a cultural phenomenon represents the audience an attitude to local dialects which cater to the taste of the majority. Third, dialect is the only mean of communication to some undereducated local people. If local dialects are forbidden in the public places, they can not communicate. To sum up, local dialects should be tolerated in public places for its unique role which Mandarian can not substitute. We should guartee its survival because dialects stand for our spiritual land. From a long-term perspective, dialects should not and would not be wiped out. There is no need for any purposeful and deliberate attempt to protect dialects. Just let dialects take their natural course. The best way to protect a dialect is to use it in daily life and pass it down from generation to generation.

Nowadays, interview is frequently used by employers as one of the preferable means to recruit prospective employees. As a result, there have been many arguments for or against it as a selection procedure. Some people regard it as a good way to select employees in a short time while others think it not proper to decide on a person just by the simple means of interview. Both of them have some truth. But in my opinion, it is an efficient way to recruit a prospective employee.
First of all, interview serves as an efficient way to examine if a person has the qualities that are needed for modern competition or for a certain company. In interview, one needs to present the best part of oneself to the interviewers. If the interviewee is well prepared and has a knowledgeable mind, he or she should show it plainly to the interviewers. The key point for the interviewee on this occasion is to be quick-minded and resourceful. Certainly one will come across some tough questions from the interviewers. What the latter expects is a witty even humorous answer. What is more, in an interview, facing a group of interviewers, who will make a decision on the interviewee' fate, the interviewee has to remain calm which is an essential quality for modern competition.
Secondly, interview embodies fairness--the principle of modern society. During an interview, all interviewees will face the same conditions, such as the same place, the same time; they will face the same interviewers and questions of similar difficulties. The outstanding candidate has to surpass all the other interviewees in answering ail sorts of questions and it mainly depends on his or her own ability. And the judgment is not made by one interviewer but usually by a group of interviewers, which is more objective and democratic.
Thirdly, interview offers a broader scope of selection for both the interviewers and interviewees. A company that needs to remit employees can hold a big interview to select their most ideal employees they expect from many applicants. The interviewees on the other hand, can attend several interviews to find the most appropriate companies in which they wish to work and develop. Thus interview is really a~ important bridge in the process of job hunting.
To sum up, interview has many advantages to cater for modern society. Thanks to the interview, both companies and interviewees can make their best choices.

Nevertheless, scholars and historical commentators in each dynasty often singled out a few occurrences which they considered to be chiefly responsible for the collapse of the old regime. Sometimes they went so far as to announce that except for a certain in-cident,the dynastic change would never have occurred. Thus, quite a few Qing schol-ars attributed the fall of the Ming dynasty to Emperor Chongzhen's execution of his ablest general,Yuan Chonghuan. On the other hand, popular writers often blamed the Manchu occupation of China on a beautiful woman named Chen Yuanyuan-a mere singing girl bought for a thousand taels of silver to become the concubine of Wu Sangui, garrison commander of the strategic Shanhai Pass.
