一部好的小說應(yīng)當(dāng)可以反映一個(gè)時(shí)代的風(fēng)貌,就這一點(diǎn)而言,此書也表現(xiàn)得相當(dāng)成功。讀了這本書,頭腦中不難形成當(dāng)時(shí)歐洲女性社會(huì)的.狀況——所有女子都以嫁出去作為一種榮譽(yù),而不管嫁給誰,婚娶成了婦女唯一的人生目標(biāo),真正的感情既少見,又難以被理解,作者深刻揭露與批判的正是這些。

但在感情的激烈斗爭(zhēng)與轉(zhuǎn)化上,《傲慢與偏見》完全無法與《亂世佳人》對(duì)比,《亂世佳人》以戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)為背景,那么感情沖突自然容易表現(xiàn),尤其是戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)的宏大場(chǎng)面(例如亞特蘭大潰退,北軍圍城),這一幕幕都是如此激動(dòng)人心,以至于讀者難以釋卷。這些對(duì)《傲慢與偏見》來說是無法達(dá)到的藝術(shù)效果。對(duì)整場(chǎng)戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)及戰(zhàn)后的社會(huì)問題,《亂世佳人》也都表現(xiàn)得很成功,于是這本書的境界也就由兒女私情升華為對(duì)國(guó)家、對(duì)社會(huì)的深刻思索,這些也是《傲慢與偏見》的匱乏的東西。
從整本書的藝術(shù)性來看,《傲慢與偏見》的確不及《亂世佳人》。但這在深刻思索后的確不難發(fā)現(xiàn),也不難理解。奧斯丁作為女作家,并無太多人贊同,這當(dāng)然造成了女作家在許多寫作才能上不及男作家。盡管我可以原諒這些不足,但相對(duì)于同樣的女作家夏洛蒂與艾米莉,奧斯丁也顯然有這些方面不足。所以至今我還堅(jiān)信,《傲慢與偏見》的確有許多過人之處,但毛姆將它列為世界十大著名小說之一就未免言過其實(shí)了。
