Dragon Boat Festival, often known as Tuen Ng Festival or Duan Wu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. It is also known as the Double Fifth.[citation needed] It has since been celebrated, in various ways, in other parts of East Asia as well, most notably Korea.

The exact origins of Duan Wu are unclear, but one traditional view holds that the festival memorializes the Chinese poet Qu Yuan of the Warring States Period. He committed * by drowning himself in a river because he was disgusted by the corruption of the Chu government. The local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fishes to prevent them from eating Qus body. They also sat on dragon boats, and tried to scare the fishes away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking dragon-head in the front of the boat.

In the early years of the Chinese Republic, Duan Wu was also celebrated as "Poets Day", due to Qu Yuans status as Chinas first poet of personal renown.

Today, people eat zongzi (the food originally intended to feed the fishes) and race dragon boats in memory of Qus dramatic death.

The August Moon Festival or Mid-Autumn Festival(Chinese characters above)is one of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month.Chinese legends say that the moon is at its brightest and roundest on this day.Based on the Gregorian calendar, this year's August Moon Festival will be held on September 19.

The August Moon Festival is often called the Women's Festival. The moon(Chinese character on right)symbolizes elegance and beauty. While Westerners worship the sun(yang or male)for its power, people in the Far East admire the moon. The moon is the 'yin' or female principle and it is a trusted friend.Chinese parents often name their daughters after the moon,in hope that they will be as lovely as the moon.

Nowadays, some western holidays like Christmas Eve and Valentine’s Day have become so popular with Chinese people that they have been a part of some people’s life.On the contrary, some traditional Chinese festivals gradually are ignored by more and more people, especially young people. However,to our delight, some social groups have appealed to common people for more attention to our own national culture.

Although a few people once advocated that traditional festivals like the Spring Festival should be discarded because they have become obstacles to social progress. It can not be accepted and supported by the majority of Chinese people in reality.Indeed, the old way of spending festivals produces several disadvantages such as money wasting and transportation overloading. But we cannot disregard its other side: traditional festivals play an active role in our life.Traditional festivals not only bring joy but also bring the family together, which is so priceless in modern society.

What we should do is to preserve the positive things and make them flourish in the modern world. As for the negative aspects of it,we should not hesitate to abandon them and prevent them from affecting and troubling us and the next generation.

Chinese Spring Festival celebrating the end of winter and the warmth of spring. It began in the last day of the lunar year, end in the 15th day of lunar New Year, also is the Lantern Festival.

During the Spring Festival, people use red lantern and Spring Festival couplets decorate a house, put on all kinds of colored clothes, often visit friends and relatives or together eat dumplings, fish, meat and other delicious food.

The children are looking forward to receiving red envelope money, and together they play each other the fireworks, with happy.

with dragon and lion dance and some other carnival activities, CCTV will held the grand Spring Festival gala.

It is noticeable that western holidays are becoming increasingly popular day by day, while Chinese traditional holidays are being somewhat neglected. Old people often complain that Chinese New Year has lost its real meaning. To their astonishment, young people in China who are ignorant about Chinese traditional holidays are crazy about Christmas or Valentine s Day.

There are several possible reasons for this phenomenon. First, western nations, such as the United States and Britain, are powerful and dominant in every aspect. Everything in these countries is assumed to be superior and adored by some modern young people. Second, the prevalence of English as a world language and the development of globalization enable western culture to prevail in China. Overwhelmed by such a trend, Chinese unconsciously get involved in western culture. Last but not least, some Chinese people have blind faith in foreign things while miss our own possessions with contempt.

I am critical of this trend. China boasts a brilliant history and splendid traditions. In modern times, Chinese tradition should be preserved and promoted. But it seems that young people no longer treasure the traditions. On the contrary, they turn to pursue enthusiastically a supposedly more modern culture. If this trend is allowed to continue, the priceless heritage of our ancestors will be replaced by western traditions. Nobody expects such a consequence. So let s join hand in hand to protect Chinese tradition, especially traditional holidays.

Maybe a lot of people dont realize that they have already passed the annual "double ninth festival" without realizing it. According to a survey of the traditional holidays cognition, nearly half of the middle school students surveyed didnt know why the double ninth festival was celebrated.

Adults forget "the double ninth festival", students do not know "the double ninth festival", along the way, Im afraid "the double ninth festival" will forever stay in the yellow pages, not a few people know "the double ninth festival is what day". In fact, the fate of many traditional festivals is not so. On the contrary, the students have a lot to do with foreign festivals that are far more exotic.

Obviously, the boom in the festival lies in the participation of the merchants. The fashion elements and exotic elements of the festival are fully developed into commercial value. The atmosphere of the festival, which is created by the merchant, has forced us to accept and become more familiar with the people in each of us. Retailers are section of the excessive preference for traditional festivals snub, reason is not that local festival no development value, and only lies in our ability to businesses lack of mining and independent innovation. In many ways, our entrepreneurs are more likely to be a contributing manufacturer than to "r&d" and "innovation". They are always happy to follow the example of foreign businessmen, who are good at copying "concrete ways" but not "the essence".

In a sense, it is still up to the "innovative consciousness" of the business to make national festivals flourish like the foreign festivals. Merchants "innovative consciousness", of course, the enhancement could not have finished between dawn and seize the day, as we are also in many industry cannot leave the somebody elses "production license", the key production technology has always been firmly in the hands of others.

So does it mean that we can only watch the traditional holiday of silence die in vain? Of course not. In times of business, education will be the most necessary supplement. Why can we think of putting love education and education into the classroom, but not giving the ancient Chinese festival folklore to the students? Before the good social atmosphere of a traditional festival, the absence of social education function must be by the school education to complement, not only a traditional festival of "date".

So business revival and school education are the "hands" of the traditional holiday. Both hands are caught, and traditional festivals are not forgotten.

Mid-autumn day falls on the fifteenth day of eighth lunar month. For Chinese, the full moon means blessedness and unity. My explanations of interesting questions:

1、Why do Chinese have Spring Festival? Where did it come from?

In Chinese mythology, the monster Nian is a beast that lives in the mountains. Every 365 days, it comes out of hiding to attack people, especially children. That day is the critical day for people. But Nian is sensitive to loud noises and is afraid of the color red. People came up with a plan to drive the monster away. On the day Nian came out, people shut doors and stay at home. They made loud noises and light firecrackers to scare away Nian.

What's the happiest day of the year? Undoubtedly, it is the most solemn traditional festival of the Chinese nation, the Spring Festival.

A few days before the Spring Festival, dad took me and my brother and my Cousins to a market for New Year's goods. due to the heavy influence of western cultures, more and more modern chinese people prefer western holidays to traditional ones. when christmas or valentine day comes, youngsters flood into bars, restaurants, and department stores to celebrate these festivals which their ancestors know little about.

the reason behind this social phenomenon is obvious: in a society dominated by mass media and consumerism, festivals and holidays from abroad are labeled as “fashionable and new”, while traditional ones as something “out of date or old”. young people all over the world have regarded western life style depicted in hollywood films as their ultimate goal of life. therefore it’s no wonder that chinese young people love christmas much more than spring festival.

the influence of such a social phenomenon should be carefully studied. in my opinion, the wide spread and recognition of western holidays will definitely harm our traditional value. if we don’t take some measure, in years to come, chinese cultural heritage may be alien to our offspring. it’s high time that the government took some action.

The Laba Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the eighth day of the twelfth month of the lunar Chinese calendar. "La" is the name given to the 12th lunar month and 8 is pronounced as "ba" in Chinese, which translated is "Laba." There are several legends about the origin of this festivity and we could not tell which one is true. But what we know today is that this festival started as a sacrificial offering to ancestors. It was also a time for the ancient Chinese to pray to heaven and earth that there would be a bountiful harvest. Many people hoped for good luck as well for the coming year.

Traditionally, the Laba rice porridge is the most important element of the festival. Generally, the porridge contains eight ingredients which can include glutinous rice, red beans, millet, Chinese sorghum, peas, dried lotus seeds and some other ingredients, such as dried dates, chestnut meat, walnut meat, almond, peanut, etc. The porridge must be boiled for many hours and then offered as a sacrifice to the ancestors. This must be done before noontime. Also, it is tradition that family members eat the porridge together. Then they leave some as a symbol of hope for a good harvest the coming year.

Another custom is the soaking of Laba garlic. Garlic is soaked in vinegar for more than twenty days starting from Laba festival. Then when the Chinese New Year comes, the garlic and vinegar is used alongside jiaozi on the table.

The seventh day of the seventh lunar month is the Chinese valentine's day. It was a beautiful day for young men and women.
